Pro Paintball after COVID-19
COVID-19……the hot topic of hot topics…..
While the world is stumbling back to some new kind of normal in a few areas, all of us in paintball are just sitting here, not-so-patiently, wondering…..
- When do I get to play again?
- Will the NXL get to finish the season?
- How am I supposed to be nice to anyone if I can’t shoot bad guys on the weekends?
Pretty close, right? We are all thinking the same thing! In fact, this situation got me to thinking.
I realized that I haven’t gone this long without playing paintball since I started! That is 18 years of consecutive, competitive paintball. It’s been frustrating, but here are a few things I have been doing to get through this paintball dry spell;
First up, Maui Thai! This is essentially kickboxing with some spin kicks and elbows. I’ve been dedicating some of my workout sessions to just blowing off some steam by throwing different combinations into a heavy bag until I can barely lift a leg.
The old theory goes; Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred. So, this is one way to make sure all of that paintball energy gets transferred!
Next in my don’t kill anyone during COVID arsenal is game footage! I’ve gone back to watch some old school games ( the late 1990s/early 2000s) just for the enjoyment. Those were the matches I grew up watching in paintball. I’ve also been going back to watch recent event footage.
I don’t think there is any better way to stay mentally focused on the game right now than reviewing footage.
Last, but certainly not least, I have been doubling down on my work (as I am sure you can tell from these blogs…). It’s important to me that when my paintball career is all over and I have to move on from being an athlete, I have something of my own that will give me that same freedom.
We are spoiled as national players (regardless of what level you are). We have this amazing opportunity to travel and compete all over the world for cheap or even for free. We have chances to see and do more things than most kids read about in their history books.
I mean…..are you ok with going from that to a cubicle and 6 bosses?
Ain’t no way I am letting that happen!
